Question:

After Installing the Store-It Drive software on my Windows based computer and connecting the hardware, the EZ-Touch Backup Button does not launch the Retrospect Xpress 7 software. How can this be resolved?

Answer:

The difficulties that you are encountering are most likely a result of not restarting your computer once the software installation was complete. To properly install the Store-It Drive, you must install the accompanying software CD and ensure that you restart your computer. Once you have restarted your computer you may connect the Store-It Drive to your computer’s USB port. Wait approximately 30 seconds for your computer to recognize and install the Store-It Drive hardware. Press the EZ-Touch Backup Button to launch the Retrospect Xpress software. Follow the on-screen instructions as prompted to configure your backup.

Question:

Why does the USB cable provided with the Store-It Drives have two USB connections on one end?

Answer:

The Store-It Drive USB cable includes a Mini B Type USB connector on one end for connecting to the Mini B Type USB port on the back of the Store-It Drive. The other end of the USB cable includes two USB Type A connectors, one main connector and one secondary connector. This is referred to as a “Y-split” USB cable. The main connector receives both power and data from the computer’s USB port. The secondary connector acts as a second power source. Rather than having to use an external power supply to power your Store-It Drive, you can simply connect both USB connectors to two USB ports on your laptop or desktop computer. This ensures that the Store-It Drive receives enough power from your computer’s USB ports.

Depending on your computer’s configuration, the 1.8” Store-it Drive may only require a single one of the Type A USB connectors be connected to your system. You may connect the “main” USB Type A connector to one of your computer’s USB ports. Please refer to the Store-It Drive Quick Start guide to determine which USB Type A connector is the main connector and which is the secondary connector. If your Store-It Drive does not operate correctly when only one Type A connector is connected to your computer, it is required that you connect both Type A connectors.

Question:

The Store-It Drive USB cable came with two USB Type A connectors on one end, but I don’t have two USB ports available. What should I do?

Answer:

The 2.5” Store-It Drive Hi-Speed USB Portable Hard Drives require that you connect both USB Type A connectors to available USB ports on your computer. If you do not have two adjacent USB ports, you may use a USB extension cable to connect one of the Type A connectors to a more convenient USB port, perhaps in the back of the computer or such.

If you are using a 1.8” Store-It Drive Hi-Speed USB Portable Hard Drive, you can simply connect the “main” Type A USB connector of the cable to the one USB port on your computer. If the Store-It Drive does not operate correctly, it is required that you connect the “secondary” Type A connector.

If you only have one USB port , you may need to add USB ports to your computer so that you can use this product. For desktop systems, you can add a USB hub or a USB add-on card. For notebook or portable computers, you can add a PCMCIA to USB adapter card. Please consult the computer manufacturer for advice on how to add USB ports. Question:

I see that the Store-It Drive has a connector for a power supply on the back of the drive. Is there a power supply available for these drives?

Answer:

If you do not have 2 USB ports, or if you have a single USB port and are not able to add USB ports to your computer, there is the option of connecting an external power supply. An external power supply is available at your local Radio Shack store or online at http://www.radioshack.com. Below are the power supply specifications and part number for Radio Shack stores.

Is the EZ-Touch Button Backup Feature supported on Macintosh operating systems?

The EZ-Touch Button Backup feature is only supported on Windows operating systems at this time. However, Macintosh computer users can install the provided Retrospect Xpress software on their Macintosh. Once installed and configured on your Mac, backing up your computer can be as simple as clicking a button or creating scheduled backups.

Question:

I purchased a 60GB Store-It Drive, but when I connect it to my computer, it only shows as 55.8GB. Is something wrong?

Answer:

The 60GB refers to the unformatted capacity of the hard disk drive. This is the size of the drive before it is formatted. Formatting a hard drive, is the process of preparing it for use. The drive is divided into blocks and tables are created to manage the blocks. This process consumes some of the drive’s initial capacity. Therefore, 60GB is the unformatted capacity of the hard disk drive and 55.8GB is the formatted and ready for use capacity. This is not specific to the Store-It Drive; in fact this is common to all hard drives. The unformatted capacity of any hard drive will always be greater than the formatted capacity. Depending on the size of the disk, more or less space will be consumed. Formatting will consume less space on a smaller disk than it will on a larger disk. For example, a 60GB unformatted hard drive may show up as 55.8 after formatting. A 250GB hard drive might show up as 228GB.

Question:

What is the difference between Backup and Duplicate?

Answer:

  • Backup copies files in a proprietary format only accessible using Retrospect. Duplicate copies files in standard file format so they can be opened or used right on the backup disk without having to go through Retrospect. * Backups offer optional compression, not available with Duplicates.

  • Backups offer optional encryption, not available with Duplicates.

  • Backups can save old data incrementally so files deleted from the source are still available in the backup. Duplicate basically keeps a mirror image of the source so each duplicate operation overwrites previous data and only retains the current files.

  • Duplicates are always a one-to-one operation; one volume is duplicated to one volume. If you have multiple volumes to duplicate you will have to create an empty folder on the destination for each disk you wish to copy. You can then define those empty folders as “Subvolumes” from within Retrospect. This will allow you to copy Source volume #1 to Destination subvolume #1 and Source volume #2 into destination subvolume #2. The Retrospect User’s Guide contains detailed instructions on how to configure a folder as a Subvolume.

I would like to use the Store-It Drive on my server running Windows 2000 Server or Windows 2003 Server, does the Store-It Drive support server operating systems?

The Store-It Drive product is designed to be a client backup solution. The Retrospect Express 7 software provided with the Store-It Drive product does not support Windows Server operating systems. However, the Retrospect Express software provided is upgradable to support Windows Server operating systems. Question:

I would like to reformat my Store-It Drive on my Windows 2000 or Windows XP based computer using the NTFS format option. Is this possible?

Answer:

Yes, you may format the Store-It Drive using an NTFS format type. However, please be advised that Windows 98SEWindows Me (as well as older Windows operating systems) do not support the NTFS format type. Mac OS does not support writing to NTFS volumes. Once formatted in NTFS, you will not be able to access your Store-It Drive on Windows 98SE and Windows Me. You will be able to mount and access the drive on a Mac, but you will not be able to write data to the drive.

Question:

I am attempting to reformat my Store-It Drive on my Macintosh computer, but the Disk Utility hangs and the format never completes. Now, my Store-It Drive does not mount on my Mac OS desktop.

Answer:

You may encounter such difficulties as described above if you are trying to format your Store-It Drive using the Disk Utility program and you are running Mac OS 10.4.6 or Mac OS 10.4.7. It seems that there is a bug in the Disk Utility software on these two operating system versions that causes the Disk Utility application to hang when formatting USB devices. This is not a Store-It Drive issue, but rather an issue with the Mac OS.

What you will need to do is to boot off of your Mac OS Installation CD and use the embedded Disk Utility to format. This should be an older version of the Disk Utility program, which should not have the above mentioned bug. This should resolve your difficulties and allow you to partition and format the Store-It Drive as well as other USB Mass Storage Devices.

Question:

When attempting to run a backup on my Macintosh computer, I receive an error from Retrospect that will not allow me to complete the backup. Why is this?

Answer:

Retrospect Express on Mac does not support backup files larger than 2GB ( 2 gigabytes) when using the default FAT32 format that Store-It Drive is shipped with. In order to store backup files larger than 2GB, you will need to reformat your Store-It Drive in a Mac OS format. Mac OS Extended is recommended. Use the built-in Disk Utility program to repartition and format your Store-It Drive in Mac OS Extended. If you are unfamiliar with using the Disk Utility program to partition and format discs in Mac OS, please email our support department at support@pexagontech.com for detailed instructions on how to perform the reformat.

Question:

I would like to completely backup my system so that I could restore my operating system, program files; data and so on should my hard drive crash or something go wrong. Is this possible with the Store-It Drive product?

Answer:

The Retrospect Express backup software provided with the Store-It Drive products includes an option called “Disaster Recovery”. In order to completely recover your computer (including operating system, program files, data files and more) you would first need to choose the “My Computer” backup option when configuring your backup (see page 14 in the user manual for PC users). After you have completed a full system backup, you can utilize the “Prepare for Disaster Recovery” option in the software to create a bootable CD from which to restore your entire computer. This bootable CD contains a stripped down version of your Windows operating system (including your license key) and Retrospect software. You would start (boot) your computer form this CD and restore all of your data using the wizard driven restore feature embedded into the CD.

Retrospect does not require that you update the bootable CD, only that you keep your backup up to date. Retrospect uses the backed-up information to restore.
